Meta tags are special HTML tags that can be used to carry information, which can then be read by the browsers or other programs after a search term has been placed onto the search engine. When internet search engines were first created, webmasters included meta tags in their pages to make it easy for search engines to determine what pages were about. Search engines also used these meta tags when deciding how to rank the page for different keywords.
The description meta tag describes the web page to the search engines. Search engines use the meta tags in two ways:
1. They read and index the text in the tag.
2. In many cases, they use the text verbatim in the search results page. That is, if your web page is returned in search results page, the search engine may grab the page text from the description tag and place it under the text from the title tag so that the searcher can read your description.
The description meta tag is very much important, so you should use it. Place the description tag immediately below the title tags and then create a nice keyword description of up to 250 characters (including spaces).
It is ok to duplicate your most important keyword once, but please do not over do it as it will not do any good for your search engine ranking, but it will only upset the search engines. Overloading your description tags or any other page component with the same keyword or keyword phrase is known as spamming. Trying to trick search engines by over doing the keywords may cause your website being penalized by the search engines.
One of the most important things that you should remember; you should consider your description tag as not only your search engine component, but also a sales tool. Remember that much of the tag perhaps first 150-170 characters will quite likely be seen in the search results, so you want to use something that encourages people to click on the link.
